Foundation Update – February 2012
The Summit Hill Elementary Foundation has accomplished many of its goals in its short existence. In the 2011-2012 school year, our Foundation raised approximately $65,000.
To date, we have completed the following:
- LCD projectors for all homerooms, special education and special area classes
- Purchased a cart housing 30 iPads
- Provided iPad training for teachers on use in the classroom
Homeroom classes in grades 4, 5 and in 2 third grade classes have Promethean Interactive Boards. Included with these boards are hand-held student response systems such as ActiVotes, ActivExpressions, and ActiveSlates. In the rest of our third grade classes along with our special education classes, the Foundation has purchased Mimio Interactive tools, bringing interactive capabilities to classroom computers and projectors. In grades kindergarten, first and second, the Foundation installed ceiling-mounted LCD projectors. In all classrooms where needed, we provided speakers to amplify sound.
***********************************************************************************
To move to next level in technology, we would like to get all of third grade using the same format for resources. Currently our third grade teachers use both Promethean and Mimio to create instructional tools. We would also like to purchase additional Mimio Interactives for grades kindergarten, first and second. Finally we would like to purchase additional student response systems and an additional iPad cart of 30 iPads.
Initially our plans were to install a new playscape. However, the Foundation is interested in contracting a landscape architect to create a proposal for playground enhancements. In watching and talking to students, making the total spaces we have more functional is a priority; in other words, an artificial ground cover might allow more play area for gross motor engagement. The Foundation will be meeting with a grounds specialist from Fulton County Schools as well as landscape architects to present proposals to the Foundation. We are seeking volunteers interested in serving on a task force to help us study the next steps for playground enhancements.

Husky Hike is a Success!!
The Summit Hill Foundation board would like to thank ALL of the generous SHE families and corporations who supported this year’s largest fundraising campaign, The Husky Hike! These dollars are already being used to help fund school-wide technology, including the installation of projectors for all kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms as well as the purchase of two mobile learning tablet carts. Future plans also include Phase II of the Playground improvement project.

The Husky Hike

We hope you have enjoyed your summer and are ready for a great year at SHE!
The Foundation has been working hard and we have launched “The Husky Hike” as the Foundation’s main Fundraiser for 2011-2012.
Through our survey last year, we learned that many of you were not happy with the Boosterthon Fundraiser. We understand that many of you felt it was too much pressure on the children to solicit funds and that too high of a percentage of funds received went to Boosterthon and not to Summit Hill. With that sentiment expressed by so many, we have decided to keep it simple this year and do a check writing campaign which we are calling “The Husky Hike.”
While Boosterthon is not going to be our fundraising mechanism this year, it is important to remember how much money it was able to bring in to Summit Hill last year. Through Boosterthon, the 2010-2011 Fundraiser grossed $88,200 in contributions, of which Summit Hill kept $46,000.
The second main fundraiser for the Foundation was the “Brick Program.” Many families purchased a brick for either $250 or $500 and through this program, the Foundation brought in about $21,500.
With the success of these two programs, the Foundation was able to raise about $67,500. This money enabled the Foundation to purchase Phase I of the playground enhancement plan and Mimio Boards for 10 classrooms along with many other items that your children benefit from on a daily basis.
“The Husky Hike”
- Combination of the Foundation’s main Fundraiser and the Brick Campaign
- Goal is to raise $80,000
- Requesting $100.00 per child enrolled at SHE – please consider donating as much as you have during previous years. Last year SHE families contributed approximately $135.00 per student through Boosterthon and the Brick Campaign.
